Video: Opening Day at Dadeland

We almost headlined this clip “Dadeland Mall as You’ve Never Seen It Before!” But we thought better of it, as some long-timers out there will definitely remember Dadeland as this clip records it on its opening day, October 1, 1960 — an open-air shopping plaza, offering sixty-two shops and services, with odd-looking animal sculptures scattered here and there.

On opening day the biggest store at Dadeland was Burdine’s; another “anchor,” Jordan Marsh, had not yet opened. Larry Birger, Business Editor for the Miami News, covered the opening and found Dadeland traffic as impressive as the “vast throng of shoppers” who mobbed the mall, reporting that “the 3,000-car parking lot was full”. It’s nice to know that some things never change…
