History Fresh & Local in Coral Gables

Merrick House in Coral Gables.

History indicates that Coral Gables founder George Merrick sold fruit and vegetables from his family’s farm before the Merrick’s grapefruit grove bore fruit, but George’s mother Althea was in charge of the family garden at 907 Coral Way. Now the Edible Community Gardens Project is tending the only community garden located at a historically designated home in South Florida. The Project not only raises awareness of sustainable gardening and delicious food, but also builds appreciation for Merrick House, completed in 1910, and support for its preservation.
